My condition was seen as a natural occurrence not to be tampered with. Medicine beyond a rudimentary level was seen as "meddling" and punished as a sin.

Science has rules, laws, order, even in the messiest of fields. The arcane is more anarchic, a power unto itself that's almost sentient. The codified strength of rituals has a place among that abyss of magic, but even then, one is simply engaging chaos with more chaos.
